2. What we handle, why, and on what basis
Your purchase. You buy through Polar, the merchant of record (see the terms of sale). Polar takes the payment, and we never see your card number. From Polar we receive your email address and country, which every purchase needs, and your name, whether you buy as an individual or a business, a business tax number, and your billing address, if you gave them, since the checkout asks for those only as you choose. We also receive the order and the subscription: which product, its status and dates, and your licence key. We use them to give you your licence and to support you, and to keep the accounts the law requires. The basis is the contract with you (Article 6(1)(b)) and our legal obligations as a business (Article 6(1)(c)).
Licence checks. To check your licence, InterDirector sends our licence service your licence key, an activation code and the Mac’s name with a short code. It is sent when you enter a key, when InterDirector starts and now and then while it runs. The service checks the key with Polar and passes the answer back. It stores none of these details and logs no key, name or email, only counts of results and coarse errors. Your internet address is visible to it, as on any connection. The basis is the contract (Article 6(1)(b)) and our legitimate interest in keeping licences valid (Article 6(1)(f)).
The free trial. To give each Mac one trial, InterDirector sends the licence service a code worked out from the Mac’s hardware identifier, which cannot be turned back into it, and the Mac’s name. The service keeps the code, the start and end of the trial and the Mac’s name in a database in Cloudflare’s EU jurisdiction. The name lets us tell whose trial it is when you ask us about it. The basis is our legitimate interest in stopping a trial from being repeated (Article 6(1)(f)). You can object to it (section 7).
The web remote over the internet. When you switch it on, your Mac connects to our relay at remote.interdirector.com and gives it your Show’s link, a secret code that goes with it, and a pass from the licence service that says the Mac may use the relay. Remotes that open the link connect to the relay too, and the relay passes what they and your Mac say to each other: the buttons pressed and what the remote shows. The relay also passes your Mac the remote’s internet address, which InterDirector uses only to slow down wrong passwords, and its browser’s description, which names it in your Mac’s settings. Your password never goes through it. The relay keeps only a code worked out from the secret, so that no other Mac can take your link; it keeps nothing else and logs nothing that was said, only counts of events. The basis is the contract (Article 6(1)(b)): it is a part of InterDirector you chose to use.
Receiving over the internet. When you get an address for a network input over the internet, InterDirector asks our stream relay, at streams.interdirector.com, with the pass the licence service gave your Mac, which says that the Mac is licensed or in a trial and which licence it is, without saying who you are. The relay keeps the address’s region and identifier, codes worked out from its logins (never the logins themselves), its passphrases, which its servers need, and when it was last used; an address unused for 90 days is forgotten, and removing the input, or releasing the addresses no open Show uses, forgets it at once. While the input runs, the phone or encoder you set up sends its picture and sound to one of our relay servers in the region you chose, which passes them straight on to your Mac: nothing of the stream is recorded or kept, and the server logs no one’s address. The relay counts your licence’s addresses and running streams, so that each licence has six of each at most. The basis is the contract (Article 6(1)(b)): it is a part of InterDirector you chose to use.
InterDirector ReCast. When you enter a ReCast key and start ReCast, InterDirector sends our ReCast service, at switcher.interdirector.com, the key, the region you chose and your Show’s picture format, with the pass the licence service gave your Mac, which says that the Mac is licensed or in a trial without saying who you are. The service asks Polar about a key the first time it is used, and again when it starts or extends a ReCast, to learn its hours and that it is still valid. It keeps the key only as a code worked out from it, with its last four characters, Polar’s identifier for it and its hours, so that we can tell keys apart when you ask us about one. It keeps each ReCast’s address, region, server and times, and, until it ends, the login, stream key and access code that ReCast was given. While ReCast runs, it also keeps what you set on ReCast’s page — your platforms’ addresses and stream keys among them — and which outputs are sending, so that a server that replaces a lost one can carry on (see its terms of service); these are deleted when ReCast ends. Your stream passes through ReCast’s server, in the region you chose, to the platforms you set: we do not keep, watch or use it. Recordings you make stay on that server until ReCast ends, and are then deleted with it. The basis is the contract (Article 6(1)(b)).
Issue reports. When you choose Help → Report an Issue… and press Send, InterDirector sends our support service, at support.interdirector.com, what you wrote, the email address you gave, the screenshots you added, and those of the following that you left in, which the window lists, with their sizes, before you send: InterDirector’s journal, its own lines from the macOS log for the last day, its crash reports from the last 30 days, and a summary of your Mac (its model, processor, memory and macOS version, how long it has been running and its time zone, InterDirector’s version, whether it is licensed or in a trial, and the audio output’s name). The journal and the logs name your inputs, outputs and devices as you named them; they do not contain your stream keys or passwords, and your Show itself is not sent. The report carries the pass the licence service gave your Mac, which says that the Mac is licensed or in a trial and does not say who you are, and which limits a Mac to ten reports a day. We are emailed that a report has arrived, with your address, the start of what you wrote, and your Mac’s model and versions. We use a report to answer you and to put right what went wrong. Nothing is sent unless you press Send. The basis is the contract (Article 6(1)(b)) and our legitimate interest in supporting our customers and improving InterDirector (Article 6(1)(f)).
Update checks. InterDirector asks our update server, at interdirector.com, whether a newer version exists. The server sees the version being asked about and your internet address while it answers, and it keeps no access logs. The basis is our legitimate interest in delivering updates (Article 6(1)(f)).
When you write to us, at support@interdirector.com, through the website’s Contact support chat, or to info@interdirector.com. Our helpdesk, which we run ourselves on our own server at Hetzner in Finland, keeps support conversations, issue reports from InterDirector included. We keep your message and our reply to answer you and to help the next person with the same question. The basis is our legitimate interest in supporting our customers (Article 6(1)(f)) and, for a customer, the contract.
What InterDirector never sends. Nothing about your Shows, your inputs, your overlays or how you use InterDirector, and no hardware serial number. The journal and diagnostics that InterDirector keeps stay on your Mac unless you send them with an issue report.
3. Where the information comes from
From you, from Polar when you buy, and from your copy of InterDirector when it checks a licence, starts a trial, asks for an update or sends an issue report you wrote.
4. Who handles it on our behalf, and transfers outside the EU or EEA
- Polar Software, Inc., 3500 South DuPont Highway, Dover, DE 19901, United States, sells the licence as merchant of record and processes your payment through its payment partner (Stripe). It handles your checkout data under its own privacy policy, and it says it may transfer data to the United States and other countries outside the EU and EEA. Polar is the seller, and it decides for itself how it handles your checkout and payment data, so it answers for that under its own policy. We receive from Polar only what we need to give you your licence and to support you, and we answer for what we hold. Questions about payments and your checkout data can go to Polar as well as to us.
- Cloudflare, Inc. runs our licence service, the web remote’s relay, the stream relay’s control service, the ReCast service and the support service, the database of trials and the database and storage of issue reports, which are in Cloudflare’s EU jurisdiction. A request passes through a Cloudflare location near you, which can be outside the EU and EEA. Where Cloudflare transfers personal data from the EU to the United States it relies on its certification under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and, if that were ever invalidated, on the EU standard contractual clauses in its data processing agreement.
- Hetzner Online GmbH hosts the relay servers that pass a stream over the internet from a phone to your Mac, in the region you choose: Falkenstein or Nuremberg in Germany, or Helsinki in Finland. A server exists only while streams use it. It also hosts each InterDirector ReCast on a server of its own, which exists only while ReCast runs: in Germany or Finland for a European region, and in Ashburn or Hillsboro in the United States, or in Singapore, if you choose one of those regions. Your stream, ReCast’s page settings and your recordings are then handled there, outside the EU and EEA, because you chose that region for the service you asked for (Article 49(1)(b)). Choose a European region to keep them in the EU.
- Our mail server, which sends and receives our email, the notice of an issue report included, is operated by us on a server hosted by Hetzner Online GmbH in Finland.
We do not sell or give your details to anyone else.
5. How long we keep it
- Accounting records of a purchase: as long as the law requires them to be kept, which under the Finnish Accounting Act is six years from the end of the financial year in which the record was made.
- Trial records: the code, the dates and the Mac’s name are kept without end, because a Mac is to have one trial only, and a code that cannot be turned back into your Mac’s identifier does not identify you on its own.
- Support messages: kept for 12 months after the last message, then deleted.
- Issue reports: kept for 12 months after they arrive, then deleted with their files; sooner if you ask.
- Licence checks: not kept by us.
- The web remote’s relay: the code worked out from a link’s secret is kept while the link can be used, since it is what keeps the link yours. Nothing that passes through the relay is kept.
- InterDirector ReCast: ReCast’s page settings, its login, stream key and access code, and its recordings are deleted when it ends. The record of a key (its code, last four characters, Polar’s identifier and hours) and of each ReCast (its address, region and times) is kept for 90 days after ReCast ends, or, for a key never used, after its hours are over, so that we can answer questions about it, and then deleted.
6. Automated decisions
InterDirector refuses to start the outputs that go to the world when a licence has ended or was never given. That follows from the state of the licence, and it does not profile you. If you think it is wrong, write to us and we will look at it by hand.
7. Your rights
You have the right to see the personal data we hold about you and to have anything wrong corrected, to ask us to delete it, to restrict how we use it in some cases, to receive what you gave us in a usable form, and to object to processing that rests on our legitimate interest. Write to the address above. We may ask you to prove your identity, and we answer within the time the regulation sets, in general within one month. Some things we cannot delete on request: accounting records we must keep, and the code and dates of a trial, which we keep to stop a repeat.
You also have the right to complain to the supervisory authority, the Data Protection Ombudsman (tietosuoja.fi).
8. Cookies and the checkout
This website sets no cookies of its own. The checkout, when you press the buy button, opens Polar’s page over ours. What that page stores on your device is Polar’s, and is described in its policy.
9. Changes to this notice
We may update this notice when the law or what we do changes. Updates are published on this page, and one that matters to you is announced in the changelog.
