Getting started with InterDirector Cam

InterDirector Cam is InterDirector’s own iPhone app. It turns an iPhone into a production camera: it sends the phone’s camera and sound over SRT or RTMP to InterDirector, on your network or over the internet, and shows InterDirector’s tally on the phone. It also sends to any other SRT or RTMP receiver, without the extras that need InterDirector. See the app’s page for what it does at a glance.

The app is free, with no account and no sign-in. It is for iPhone only (iOS 26 or later), and its camera screen is laid out in landscape.

Install it

Install InterDirector Cam from the App Store. On the home screen it is called ID Cam.

The first time it opens, iOS asks whether it may use the camera and the microphone, and, the first time it sends on your network, whether it may find and connect to devices on your local network. Allow all three: without the local network, it cannot reach InterDirector on the same Wi-Fi.

The screen

  • The picture fills the screen. A tap on it focuses or meters there, and a pinch zooms.
  • Down the left, the rail: hiding the controls (the eye), Focus, Exposure, White balance, the torch, Camera, and Settings (the gear). See the camera’s controls.
  • On the right, the zoom slider, under your thumb.
  • Along the top, the sound meter and the battery. A tap on the meter opens the Sound drawer.
  • At the bottom, Start, with where the phone sends on its left and how that is going on its right. A tap on either opens Settings › Connection.

Set it up from InterDirector

The quickest way: InterDirector shows a QR code, and the phone scans it.

  1. In InterDirector, press Add Input… and choose Network Stream. Leave the Protocol on SRT, with Direction set to Listen for a sender, or set Comes in to Over the Internet for a phone on mobile data (see Sending from the phone).
  2. In the input’s settings, press InterDirector Cam QR Code…. The code opens in a window of its own, with Close. Add the input. One over the internet waits until you start it, with Start Server or Start on its card.
  3. On the phone, tap the gear at the bottom of the rail, choose Connection, and tap Scan InterDirector’s QR Code. Point the phone at the code.
  4. The phone asks Set up for “Cam 2”? (the input’s name), with where it will send and in what, such as SRT on this network · 1080p at 50 fps. Tap Use This Setup.
  5. Press Start, the coral button at the bottom.

The input’s card in InterDirector shows the phone’s picture a moment later. The first Start after the app opens reminds you to turn on Do Not Disturb first: a call or a notification can take the camera away while you send. Stop asks before it stops, so one stray tap cannot take a camera off the air.

What a scan sets

  • The connection: the address, and for SRT its stream ID, passphrase and latency, or for RTMP its stream key.
  • The source name: the input’s, shown beside Start and in Settings › Connection.
  • The resolution and frame rate of your Show: 4K for a 4K Show, 1080p for a Show from 1080 lines up, and 720p below that, at the Show’s frame rate. If the Show runs at a frame rate the phone does not offer, it says so and keeps its own.
  • Anti-flicker for 50 Hz or 60 Hz lights, as the Show’s frame rate suggests, unless you have turned it off.
  • Tally, so the phone shows when it is on Program or Preview. See Tally and control from InterDirector.

A scan replaces whatever the phone was set up for before: the phone holds one setup at a time. It does not change the codec, the quality, or the camera’s own settings. Scanning waits until the phone stops sending.

Set it up by hand

For a receiver other than InterDirector, or an address you have been given, open Settings › Connection and fill it in:

  • Send over: SRT or RTMP.
  • For SRT: Server (as host:port), and Stream ID, Passphrase and Latency if the receiver asks for them.
  • For RTMP: Server (such as rtmp://host:1935/live) and Stream key.

A whole srt:// or rtmp:// address pasted into Server fills in the other fields. Then set the resolution and frame rate to match the receiver in Settings › Video (see Sending from the phone).

An address typed by hand has no tally, and InterDirector cannot control the camera through it: both come with a scan of InterDirector’s code. Settings › Connection says so.
